Apple har postat en detaljerad rapport på 13 sidor där en förklaring på hur iPhone hanterar platstjänster och mer därtill har gått ut. Företaget vet vilket blåsväder som har uppstått i samband med den ”tragedi” som upptäcktes i iOS 4.3.2 där platstjänsterna gick på anabola steroider och vill mer än gärna göra rätt för sig.
Det är Edward J. Market från det Vita Huset som har fått ta del av rapporten. Enligt flera redogörelser fokuserar Apple på användarens säkerhet och menar på att privatinformation aldrig någonsin skulle spridas eller delas till tredjepart. Dom förklarar också vikten av att iPhone lagrar platstjänsterna temporärt för snabbare funktionalitet och således varför lokalisationshistoriken över huvudtaget existerar.
Apples olika delmål är tydliga i rapporten och den fokuserar, utöver nämnda punkter, på följande:
”Apple is deeply committed to protecting the privacy of our customers. We do not share personal information with third parties without our customers’ specific consent. And we make our partners agree to certain strictures around protecting their privacy.
Using stored information can speed up determining its location. Apple maintains a crowdsourced database of Wi-Fi hot spots and cell towers.
By design, Apple gives customers control, and has built a master location switch. Users simply switch the location services switch off. When off, the device will not collect location information. Apple does not receive any data without first obtaining consent from a simple pop-up box. The pop-up box is not optional.
Apple responds to all concerns about privacy that may arise. Apple was never tracking individuals’ locations. The location data gathered was not the location of the iPhone, but about the hotspots and cell towers nearby. It was protected from access by other apps on the phone.
While we were investigating the cache we discovered a bug that allowed the data to be updated even when the location master switch was off.
Apple is committed to giving customers strong and clear choices in how their data is used. We share the committee’s concerns about collection and privacy of customer data, especially location.”
Vi kan kort konstatera att Apple prioriterar säkerhet samtidigt som dom förmodligen inte anser att problemet var så pass kritiskt som många andra menade på. Företaget påpekar nämligen att det inte var användarens lokalisation som lagrades utan att det endast gick att se vilka master som hade fångat upp en signal från enheten, information som har varit tydlig sedan tidigare.
All ära till Apple att dom tog sig tid att göra detta arbete. Jag kan dock tänka mig att det var en ganska stor press från omgivningen som tvingade fram rapporten och om saker och ting skulle vara felfritt hade vi aldrig varit vid det här scenariot.
